SIXTEEN

“Deep breaths, Penny. Deep breaths.” I inhaled slowly then smiled at my reflection, trying to psych myself up for the signing.

I was operating on zero sleep. I’d been accused of plagiarism. And I’d agreed to cowrite a book with Meghan Hart. Holy freaking shit!

I should’ve been happy. I mean, this had always been one of those career goals of mine that had seemed absurd. A collaboration with my idol? With Meghan Hart?

If someone had told me it would happen when I’d begun my author career, I would’ve never believed it. Even now, I was still in shock. Though perhaps that was due more to the fact that Meghan Hart was Liam Beaudin. Which only compounded my anxiety about writing together.

Oh god. I really hope I can pull this off.

“Penny?” Raven knocked on the bathroom door, and I tried to quell my nausea. “Almost ready?”

How ironic. Every time I was on the verge of finally accomplishing some big goal or dream, my life imploded. My dad died just before I graduated high school. Erik left me at the altar on our wedding day. I was going to get to collaborate with my idol, but only because it might save my career from accusations of plagiarism.

“Yep. Yeah.” I sighed and smoothed down my skirt, lowering my voice as I looked at myself in the mirror and imagined Brinkley there with me. Cheering me on. “I am creative. I am resourceful. And I will make this day my bitch.”

Okay. I took a deep breath. You can do this.

I opened the door, expecting Raven, but instead, I found Liam waiting for me. He scanned me head to toe, his eyes hungry. Wanting.

It didn’t matter how much I told myself to act professionally toward Liam, my body still craved him. I blamed it on exhaustion. Stress. Adrenaline. At least that’s what I kept telling myself.

But I knew it was more than that. Liam had been there for me after Erik left me at the altar. He’d been compassionate and caring. And he’d helped me move forward during a time that could’ve been devastating. Plus, his story about his grandpa rejecting him was so heartbreaking that I couldn’t help but feel for him.

“You ready?” he asked.

“I thought you were taking care of the books,” I said, annoyed by my body’s response to him. The things I’d told him when I’d thought I was communicating with Meghan…

“Already done. And I’m staying close—” He placed his hand on my lower back as we headed for the door. “In case anything comes up with the announcement.”

“I can handle it.” I gnashed my teeth and straightened, taking a step away from his touch.

“Of course you can,” he said in a gentle tone. “But we’re partners.”

That might be true, but this partner had a much more public role. For once, I envied him and his secret identity. He could stand back and watch, while I had to deal with upset readers and an even more upset stomach. I’d already gone to the bathroom twice and still felt as if I needed to go again.
