âDeep breaths, Penny. Deep breaths.â I inhaled slowly then smiled at my reflection, trying to psych myself up for the signing.
I was operating on zero sleep. Iâd been accused of plagiarism. And Iâd agreed to cowrite a book with Meghan Hart. Holy freaking shit!
I shouldâve been happy. I mean, this had always been one of those career goals of mine that had seemed absurd. A collaboration with my idol? With Meghan Hart?
If someone had told me it would happen when Iâd begun my author career, I wouldâve never believed it. Even now, I was still in shock. Though perhaps that was due more to the fact that Meghan Hart was Liam Beaudin. Which only compounded my anxiety about writing together.
Oh god. I really hope I can pull this off.
âPenny?â Raven knocked on the bathroom door, and I tried to quell my nausea. âAlmost ready?â
How ironic. Every time I was on the verge of finally accomplishing some big goal or dream, my life imploded. My dad died just before I graduated high school. Erik left me at the altar on our wedding day. I was going to get to collaborate with my idol, but only because it might save my career from accusations of plagiarism.
âYep. Yeah.â I sighed and smoothed down my skirt, lowering my voice as I looked at myself in the mirror and imagined Brinkley there with me. Cheering me on. âI am creative. I am resourceful. And I will make this day my bitch.â
Okay. I took a deep breath. You can do this.
I opened the door, expecting Raven, but instead, I found Liam waiting for me. He scanned me head to toe, his eyes hungry. Wanting.
It didnât matter how much I told myself to act professionally toward Liam, my body still craved him. I blamed it on exhaustion. Stress. Adrenaline. At least thatâs what I kept telling myself.
But I knew it was more than that. Liam had been there for me after Erik left me at the altar. Heâd been compassionate and caring. And heâd helped me move forward during a time that couldâve been devastating. Plus, his story about his grandpa rejecting him was so heartbreaking that I couldnât help but feel for him.
âYou ready?â he asked.
âI thought you were taking care of the books,â I said, annoyed by my bodyâs response to him. The things Iâd told him when Iâd thought I was communicating with Meghanâ¦
âAlready done. And Iâm staying closeââ He placed his hand on my lower back as we headed for the door. âIn case anything comes up with the announcement.â
âI can handle it.â I gnashed my teeth and straightened, taking a step away from his touch.
âOf course you can,â he said in a gentle tone. âBut weâre partners.â
That might be true, but this partner had a much more public role. For once, I envied him and his secret identity. He could stand back and watch, while I had to deal with upset readers and an even more upset stomach. Iâd already gone to the bathroom twice and still felt as if I needed to go again.
